- Wikipedia (24% of cited authority sources). Concentrated entirely on canonical brand entities.
- Reddit (16%). Especially r/BuyItForLife, r/MaleFashionAdvice, and category-specific subs.
- Trade press (11%). Trade-specific publications with high editorial standards, not consumer lifestyle sites.
- Forums and review sites with high-trust verification (8%). Wirecutter, Consumer Reports, and a handful of niche review communities.
- Brand's own resource hub (3%). Yes, your own site can count as a third-party citation when the page is structured as evidence rather than marketing.
Why the distribution looks like this
Agents are trained on text and weight authority based on signals that correlate with factual reliability during pre-training. That correlation favours encyclopedic, reviewed, and community-verified sources. It does not favour brand-controlled marketing pages, paid placements, or affiliate-linked roundups, all of which were the bread and butter of 2014–2024 SEO.
The implication: a well-shaped Wikipedia entry about your brand is worth more than 50 paid placements in mid-tier lifestyle sites. Wikipedia's "no original research" rule means agents treat it as the highest-trust canonical source they will quote.
How to earn each signal

If your brand has clear notability — significant press coverage, a long operating history, or a distinct product category — you qualify for a Wikipedia entry. The key is letting an independent editor write it. Brands that try to write their own page get reverted; brands that pitch the editorial community get accepted.
Cost: $0. Time: 60-180 days of patient engagement with the editor community. The single highest-leverage brand-authority play of the decade.
Agents quote Reddit threads heavily because they are seen as community-verified, anti-marketing user opinion. The play is not "post on Reddit". The play is to make sure your brand naturally comes up in genuine threads about category preference.
How: get your product into the hands of regular Reddit contributors in your category. Genuine, non-paid contributions; no astroturf. Cost: a small seeding programme of 20-50 free units. Time: 6 months to see compounding mentions.
Trade press
Specialty publications — Drapers, Beauty Independent, RetailDive, Modern Retail — get cited far more than consumer titles. The traffic is small but the citation weight per article is large. Pitch trade press as your top channel; treat consumer press as bonus exposure.
High-trust review sites
Wirecutter, Consumer Reports, and category-specific review communities like StainedGlass.com for niche industries. Earn coverage the traditional way: send samples, follow up with data, do not bribe. One Wirecutter mention is worth roughly $30-80k in agentic visibility across the next 18 months.
Your own resource hub
When your own site publishes a well-structured comparison page — with neutral methodology, verified data, and named author — agents quote it as evidence. The trick is to write the page as a researcher would, not as a marketer.
What to stop funding
Three line items in most PR budgets are now poor return.
- Paid lifestyle press placements. Agents discount sponsored-tagged content sharply.
- Affiliate-link roundup posts. Both Google and the agents now reweight these heavily; the era of buying "top 10" placements is over.
- Generic press release distribution. Agents almost never quote wire-service content; the cost-per-citation is multiple orders of magnitude worse than trade press.
A reallocation plan
If you have a £200k annual PR budget, a defensible 2026 split looks like:
- £40k — trade press relationships and ongoing sample programmes.
- £30k — Wikipedia notability work (independent editor outreach, source-building).
